Frequently Asked Questions
About Atelier Akina
Atelier Akina was founded by a Australian-born Chinese creative, Akina Lam. She founded Atelier Akina in Sydney in 2023 when she realised crafting with her hands was a way for her to reconnect with her Chinese roots.
Atelier is a French word that means workshop or studio. Traditionally, it refers to a private space where artisans, designers, and makers create by hand — a place of skill, experimentation, and thoughtful craftsmanship rather than mass production.
Akina is the name of the founder. The name is in fact Japanese. Her mother named Akina Akina after a Japanese singer she liked at the time. However, Akina herself is Chinese and uses her cultural heritage as inspiration for her designs.
Growing up in Australia, Akina often felt caught between two worlds. In her twenties, she spent seven years focused on building a career, only to realise how disconnected and burnt out she had become.
Returning to a childhood love of crafting became a turning point. What began as working with her hands soon evolved into jewellery making — a practice that allowed her to slow down, reconnect with herself, and rediscover her Chinese roots.
Today, Akina creates jewellery as a quiet expression of identity and belonging. Each piece is designed as a reminder to return to who you truly are — and she hopes those who wear her jewellery feel that same sense of connection within themselves.
What makes Atelier Akina different is that our designs are rooted in meaning, not trends. Each piece is designed as a modern expression of Chinese heritage — drawing from history, symbolism, and materials once traded along the Silk Road, reinterpreted for contemporary life.
Unlike mass-produced jewellery, our pieces are handcrafted in small batches with intention and care. We focus on thoughtful design, cultural respect, and everyday wearability, creating jewellery that feels personal, timeless, and quietly distinctive.
Atelier Akina specialises in modern Chinese jewellery that blends cultural meaning with contemporary design. Our pieces are handcrafted in small batches using pearls, mother of pearl, glass crystals, and gold-filled metals, designed for everyday and occasion wear.
About Modern Chinese Jewellery
Modern Chinese jewellery blends Chinese cultural heritage with contemporary design. It draws inspiration from Chinese history, symbolism, materials, and everyday rituals, while being designed for modern life. Rather than replicating traditional jewellery styles, modern Chinese jewellery reinterprets them in a refined, wearable way for today.
Traditional Chinese jewellery often follows ceremonial or historical forms, while modern Chinese jewellery focuses on subtle references and clean design. At Atelier Akina, cultural elements are woven into form, material, and meaning — allowing the jewellery to feel timeless, contemporary, and suitable for everyday wear.
Modern Chinese jewellery is for those who want to reconnect with, honour, or express their Chinese heritage in a modern way. Many of our customers are Australian-born Chinese or part of the Chinese diaspora, but our jewellery also resonates with anyone who values cultural depth, thoughtful design, and meaningful craftsmanship.

Cultural Meaning Behind Our Designs
Pearls have long held significance in Chinese culture, symbolising wisdom, purity, protection, and harmony. Historically treasured by royalty and scholars, pearls were also traded along the Silk Road. Today, pearls remain a meaningful material in modern Chinese jewellery, offering quiet elegance and depth.
The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes connecting China to the wider world. Materials such as pearls, mother of pearl, jade, and glass travelled along these routes. Our jewellery references this shared history by using materials once exchanged along the Silk Road, reimagined through a modern Chinese jewellery lens.
Mother of pearl and freshwater pearls have deep roots in Chinese adornment and symbolism. Glass crystals reference early coloured glass traded through the Silk Road and later developed by Chinese artisans. Together, these materials form a modern interpretation of Chinese jewellery history — luminous, refined, and wearable.
Our jewellery is inspired by Chinese history, cultural symbolism, and everyday traditions rather than mythology or folklore. The founder also draws inspiration from her Australian upbringing, making chinese design more accessible and modernised for today.
Materials & Quality
Atelier Akina jewellery is crafted using high-quality gold-filled or sterling silver metals, freshwater pearls, mother of pearl, and glass crystals. Each material is chosen for durability, comfort, and its historical relevance to Chinese jewellery traditions.
Gold-filled jewellery is made by melting a thick layer of solid gold onto a base metal, using heat and pressure. This creates a much more durable finish than gold-plated jewellery, where only a very thin layer of gold is lightly coated onto the surface.
Yes. For the gold girlies, our gold-filled jewellery is nickel-free and hypoallergenic, making it suitable for most sensitive skin. Comfort and wearability are essential to every Atelier Akina design.
We also offer sterling silver jewellery.
Gold-filled jewellery is tarnish-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. However, to maintain the beauty of pearls and gemstones, we recommend removing jewellery before swimming, showering, or extended exposure to water.
Handcrafted jewellery reflects time, skill, and intentional design. Each piece is made in small batches with attention to detail, quality materials, and thoughtful craftsmanship — offering longevity and meaning beyond mass-produced jewellery.
